Did you know that in China, Chinese New Year is more commonly called Spring Festival?
The fifteen day celebration truly is designed to put the coldest days of winter behind and usher in Spring.
Friday night was Lantern Festival, the last night of the celebration and the first full moon of the New Year. After watching display after display of fireworks out our window, until well past midnight, I reassured my daughter, “Tomorrow, you’ll get a good night’s sleep.” But as soon as she crawled into bed the following night, the sound of cracking and banging filled her bedroom. I guess fifteen days of festivities wasn’t enough.
In our high-rise, we’re right at the level where the fireworks explode, and this year, several hit our bedroom window.
“Night after night, during Chinese New Year, the sky was aglow with fireworks, to bring in Spring.”
This building catches my eye whenever I pass and with lanterns hung, I couldn’t resist sketching.
So Happy Chinese New Year and hoping Spring comes to you, too.
Love the idea of celebrating the end of winter and the ushering in of spring. Beautiful artwork, Charity!
Thanks so much, Cheryl. I’ve been through a winter in the Prairies. You need a Spring Festival too;)
Wow! What an experience. Lovely watercolors too! The contrast between ink and watercolor is so cool! Watercolor is a medium I could never figure out, so I marvel at those who can do it well. Thanks for sharing, Charity!
Melissa, wish you could fly over and we could paint watercolour together! Thanks for your generous comment.
That would be cool!
Great pics! Hopefully the fireworks will end soon!
Still a few here and there, but life is returning to normal – if there is a normal.
I, too love the thought of ushering in Spring after a long cold winter. Your drawings are absolutely beautiful. Is this a picture of a familiar place?
Thanks, Norma. I’ve never been through the door, but I pass this place often. It always draws my eye.
Love the hint of color, Charity. Beautiful work. I have friends who lived in China for awhile and I think what you do there is go from one surprising adventure to another. 🙂
Thanks, Rachael. Life does get mundane at times, but there’s always a surprise waiting around the corner.
