It’s by no means a masterpiece, but it’s special nonetheless. This sketch symbolizes a few stolen moments in the
midst of a few strenuous weeks.
If you’ve moved recently, you know what I mean. My life has been swallowed by sorting and packing, so much so that I was glad to be forced to wait while running an errand. It offered me a couple of minutes to sketch.
It bought me back a little bit of life.
Moving a family is a huge job, even when you’re only going a few blocks – I’m more tired each morning than I was the one before. I keep thinking how alive I will feel once this is all behind us, but so many things stand between me and that place. I feel I’m moving in slow-motion, but being settled again, being able to dive into creativity again, motivates me enough to reach for another empty box.
I hope your art supplies aren’t packed away, like many of mine.
I admit I don’t organize often, but I do enjoy the result. Recently I found a small shelf that I could dedicate just to art supplies. I arranged the items I use regularly on the top shelf, and those I reach for occasionally, on the bottom. I returned pencils and brushes to their cases and gave them a place, grabbed some mugs and stood extra pencils and pens in them, then gathered stray supplies from around the house and the shelf became their home.
I was amazed how much easier it was to create when everything I needed was ready. That’s what I’m counting on once I get these boxes filled, moved, and unpacked. Purging and reorganizing is an advantage to moving that I can’t ignore.
Why not join me by organizing your creative supplies?
Since I’m wading through household items, it’ll be two weeks before you hear from me again. Then I’ll be back, with fresh inspiration after organizing my art supplies and exploring the gardens around my new home, and once again, sketching.
But don’t wait for me. Once you have your favourite supplies organized, or even sooner, go ahead and steal a moment to sketch.
My house is in an upheaval similar to the kind when moving. You made me miss those stolen moments of creativity. Thank you! It’s also a great perspective to have (especially if you’re like me and fall back on a few perfectionist tendencies). It’s easy to judge your own work and say, “It’s no masterpiece.” But when the art evokes a special memory and gains meaning, it doesn’t matter how “shoddy” it is by earthly standards. In that moment it becomes beautiful and priceless.
So true, Melissa. Looking at just a simple sketch can bring back wonderful memories.
I just finished redecorating and planting flowers on my back porch which I’ve neglected for years and it’s so peaceful out there now. And it just so happens that reorganizing and reclaiming my art studio is next on my list. I plan to get a WiFi extender so I can also write out in my studio. Looking forward to more of your adventures and artwork, Charity. God bless.
Rachael, I’m so glad you redecorated your back porch, especially after wanting to do it for so long. Enjoy the feeling of accomplishment and peace! Fun that we’ll both be organizing our art supplies at the same time.
Charity, I love the sketch, the reality of the struggle and the blessing of moving. It does cause us to purge and reorganize. I’m in that process, just not moving. Praying for you, sweet friend.
Thanks, Norma.
